 2017 Preview

Cornerstone Christian completed the 2016 season with a 8-3 record. Last year Cornerstone Christian captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class AA playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. It was the first region championship for the Chargers. Cornerstone Christian's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Clarke Prep by a score of 42-6.

The Chargers improved in 2016 with their first winning season since 2011. The Chargers won as many games as in any season since 2009. The Chargers hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Smith saw improvement as they won eight games following a 2-8 record in 2015.

Since 2010, Cornerstone Christian has gone a combined 31-43. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class AA over the past seven seasons.

Over the past 17 seasons, Cornerstone Christian has managed to compile a record of 87-91. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 5th in Class AA and 20th in the AISA.

The Chargers are led by head coach Tim Smith who is entering his eighteenth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 87-91 over the past seventeen seasons at Cornerstone Christian. Under his direction the Chargers have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times. They have won one region crown with Coach Smith.

Coach Smith's overall record as a head football coach in seventeen season stands at 87-91 (48.9%).

The Cornerstone Christian Chargers will play in Class AA region one during the 2017 season.

Overall, the region is among the weakest in the state. Qualifying for one of the playoffs spots could be a little easier. The Chargers should be considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

The Chargers open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Bessemer Academy on Thursday, August 24 at Michael B. Willis Memorial Field. Last year the Bessemer Academy Rebels finished with an overall record of 13-1 and in first place in Class AAA region one. The Rebels won the Class AAA State Championship last season when they defeated Monroe Academy by a score of 28-7 in Troy.

Cornerstone Christian and Bessemer Academy have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Chargers have a 0-5-0 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2016 with Bessemer Academy winning by a score of 35-0.
